Running is one of the most popular recreational activities in the UK with millions of us doing it on a regular basis. Not only does it provide a great way of staying fit and shedding a few pounds; it also releases endorphins which help to make us feel positive about ourselves. As a result running can become quite addictive and many that try running end up doing it on a regular basis. However, getting started is often the hardest part and many who intend to take-up running just don’t seem to get round to it. If you are one of those with good intentions, read on to discover why summer is the best time to start running.
Getting motivated
During the winter months lots of us suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, although the majority only have minor symptoms. These symptoms can leave us with a lack of motivation and we just want to shut ourselves up inside away from the cold and wet. In summer we are much happier to be outside in the good weather and often more positive in our approach to life. This means we are more receptive to new experiences and likely to give running a fair chance before making a judgement on whether it is the right activity for us. Hopefully by the time winter does come round you will be so hooked on running that the bad weather won’t put you off.
Wider route options
During the summer the reduced levels of rainfall means that grassland and country paths tend to be in better condition. The ability to safely negotiate tracks means that runners are left with much wider running options in terms of routes. This means that you can enjoy some scenery whilst staying fit which helps make running an enjoyable experience. During the winter months routes can become more limited and many will end up undertaking road running. Again, there is a good chance that one the weather takes a turn for the worse you will already be addicted and road running won’t put you off.
Less initial outlay
Many regular runners invest in the right equipment, including footwear, running tops and even leggings. However, most of this equipment is really only a necessity in the winter months when you need extra layers that are breathable. During the summer the only piece of kit that is essential is a pair of running trainers. This means that you can give running a try for a relatively small initial outlay and then buy the other required kit later if you decide to continue.
