Hi-Tec's Kenneth Jonassen emerged victorious at the 2008 European Championships. Denmark were assured of a gold medal, with Kenneth Jonassen and Joachim Persson both making the final. However, it was Jonassen who emerged victorious after being runner up 5 times previously in this competition.
The elder Dane, who trailed only during the first two points of each game, finally won 21/13, 21/16 in 36 minutes, before letting go and celebrating with his usual fist punching towards the ground.
After smashing his way through the match, scoring no less than 16 of his 42 points on winning attacks, Jonassen said "This was my toughest match and he played well in the second game, but coming into the semi-finals, I knew I was to play two of the guys I know very well and I just knew what to do to win."
"All week, I felt like a boxer defending a title, with challengers coming at me each round. And after the final win, I felt a great relief," said Jonassen. "This setting with the crowd around the court made it one of the best ever tournaments I've played in and it was even more special as all my family and friends were here to support me," added the Dane.
